Wales is the cheapest place to own and run a vehicle in the UK.
A new analysis of regional motorist spending has revealed significant disparities in the cost of motoring across the UK, with drivers in Northern Ireland paying more than £600 a year extra compared to those in Wales.
Fuel remains the most substantial expense for drivers, with Northern Ireland again topping the charts at £1,354 a year, while Welsh drivers pay just £782.
Insurance costs also vary significantly, with the average annual household premium in Northern Ireland reaching £571, compared to £446 in Wales and Scotland.
“These findings highlight how location alone can add hundreds of pounds to a motorist’s yearly budget and make clear the importance of looking for the best possible deal on your car insurance,” says Dawn Cranmer from ALA Insurance.
“For those in higher-cost regions, it’s more important than ever to protect your investment. GAP Insurance offers peace of mind in the event your car is written off or stolen, helping you recover the shortfall between your vehicle’s value and what you originally paid.”
Tips to Cut Motoring Costs
ALA Insurance offers the following tips to help UK motorists manage their motoring budgets:
-
Compare Fuel Prices Locally: Use apps or websites to find the cheapest fuel stations nearby. Small changes in price can lead to big annual savings.
-
Review Your Car Insurance Annually: Don’t auto-renew. Shopping around each year can lead to lower premiums, especially if your circumstances have changed.
-
Drive Smoothly: Gentle acceleration and braking can improve fuel efficiency and reduce wear on your vehicle.
-
Keep Your Vehicle Maintained: Regular servicing helps avoid costly repairs and improves long-term performance.
-
Consider GAP Insurance: GAP cover can save you thousands in the event of a total loss, particularly if your vehicle was financed or leased.
