A major new event at the stunning Anglesey Circuit will give motorcycle fans the opportunity to see a fabulous array of classic machinery in action, catch up with a British racing legend and even tackle the challenging circuit on their own machines.
The Welsh Classic Motorcycle Festival takes place over the weekend of May 30th and 31st.
The event, which is supported by Classic Motorcycle Mechanics magazine (CMM), includes Thunderfest, a time trial for bikes built before 1978. Whilst not a race, Thunderfest gives riders a chance to put their classic bikes to the test, going as fast, or as slow, as they want. Both road and race bikes are eligible, although they must be prepared for track use, and riders don’t need a race licence to take part.
Saturday will see three times British Superbike Champion and Grand Prix ace Niall MacKenzie on hand to demonstrate his own classic machinery and offer tips on how to ride the demanding Coastal circuit with its roller coaster sections, fast flowing curves and tight hairpins.
For riders who don’t want to participate in Thunderfest, there will be classic bike track days on both days, courtesy of specialist event organisers Classic Bike Trackdays, with groups to suit a wide variety of machinery and rider skill levels. Free rider tuition will be available as well as tyre and mechanical support. On track insurance will also be available and there will be a photographer in attendance throughout the weekend.
The weekend isn’t just about riders, however, with spectators getting the opportunity to watch a diverse array of classic machinery ridden as it was intended, catch up with Niall McKenzie and see him in action and view a range of classic displays, headlined by the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club plus plenty of trade stands.
Nor does the fun stop when the track action ends, with a restaurant and bar open until 11pm and bands playing until the early hours of Sunday morning.
Confirming his attendance, Niall McKenzie said, “I can’t wait to see you all on the Saturday at the Welsh Classic Motorcycle Festival and during the CMM track-time especially. Anglesey is a great circuit and I’m looking forward to riding my own classic around those gorgeous curves.”
CMM editor Bertie Simmonds added, “The whole weekend promises to be a real celebration of all things classic – not just with the Classic Trackdays/CMM track time, but with the Thunderfest too. It promises to be a great Welsh weekend away.”
Pre-booked admission is just £10 for the whole weekend with camping available for £15 per tent or £20 per motorhome; camping is free for track day rider +1 on Friday and Saturday night. Riders aged 18 and above can take part in the track days for £129 for a single day or £248 for both days.
