As a pioneer in the luxury hybrid sector, the Lexus range has very strong credentials that are reinforced in the latest GS450h.
The Lexus GS series saloon comprises just six models from about £33,000 to £51,000 and uses 2.5 petrol or 3.5V6 petrol/ electric engines with automatic 6sp transmission or continuously variable transmission and SE, Luxury and Sport trim levels.
Put simply, you decide which powertrain to buy and select your trim level and then you can simply enjoy the hybrid experience without compromise if you choose the bigger engine.
We had the mid-range F Sport hybid and it immediately impressed with its size at over 4.8m long, 1.84m wide and 1.45m tall and a 465 litres bootspace and room for five inside.
The highly refined and sophisticated powertrain virtually decides how it will work and provide output, leaving the driver to concentrate on the road and enjoy the experience.
The integration of petrol and electric power is uncannily smooth and impressive in its delivery, giving a very good getaway from rest, snappy overtaking and utterly composed, stress-free cruising on main roads.
I actually managed to better the combined fuel figure at up to 50mpg on some runs, and this is virtually unheard of particularly in a model of this size.
The quiet, strong delivery of power is complimented by a powerful braking system and faithful steering which made town and country driving hassle-free.
The use of front wishbones and rear multi-link suspension not only endows the Lexus GS450h with a very smooth and compliant ride, but it gives it a very strong ability to grip and handle with sharp responses.
Inside there is a lot of room for four, marginally less for five and the boot is big behind a small opening.
Visibility is not as good as I would like but you have an excellent camera system and maneuvering sensors when parking. The headlights are bright, far reaching and include auto-dip for busy roads.
The major and minor controls are very well laid out and work well while the instruments’ display is big and clear once you master its set up and screens.
The suspension is very absorbent but the seats are a work of art in the way they move, hold and cushion occupants so a journey of any length is never stressful or tiring.
All noise levels are low, the most noticeable being the road rumbles and suspension bump-thump. Open up the performance envelope and the exhaust note changes but remains pleasant.
VERDICT
Lexus GS450h is an excellent car where it matters most and it really has very few rivals and even fewer equals.
