EVs are growing in numbers but money is tight so looking for ways to save when possible and charging and maintaining their EV is one of them.
With this in mind, EV charging expert Chris Moniz at Volta EV has given his advice on 5 money-saving hacks when charging.
“Charging an electric vehicle (EV) can be a significant expense, especially in the UK where electricity prices can be high. To help you save money when charging your EV, here are five money-saving hacks,” he said.
- Time Your Charging to Off-Peak Hours: Electricity rates in the UK often vary depending on the time of day. To take advantage of cheaper rates, try to charge your EV during off-peak hours, typically late at night or early in the morning. Many EV charging providers and electricity tariffs offer discounted rates during these times.
- Use a Time-of-Use Tariff: Consider switching to a time-of-use electricity tariff that offers lower rates during off-peak hours. These tariffs can be beneficial for EV owners as they allow you to charge your vehicle at a lower cost during specific times of the day.
- Utilise Public Charging Stations with Free or Discounted Rates: Take advantage of public charging stations that offer free or discounted rates. Many shopping centres, car parks, and other public locations in the UK provide EV charging facilities with special promotions or loyalty programs that can help you save money on charging.
- Optimise Battery Charging: Avoid frequent fast charging as it can be more expensive than slower charging methods. Opt for a slower charging rate when possible, as it is generally more energy-efficient and cost-effective. Additionally, try to charge your EV when the battery level is lower rather than waiting for it to deplete completely, as this can help optimise the charging process and reduce costs.
If you want to monitor your charging costs, use a smart charging app or a dedicated EV energy monitor to track your charging costs and energy consumption. This can help you better understand your charging habits and identify opportunities to save money.
