From lingering pet smells and stale food, to poorly maintained air conditioning and damp upholstery, odours that built up in your car over the colder months can become more noticeable as temperatures rise.
In fact, Vertu has found that online searches for ‘car AC smells’ have surged by 181% in the past three months alone, suggesting many drivers are turning to the internet for ways to clear the air.
To help, motoring experts at Vertu have shared key steps drivers can take to remove stubborn smells, and keep their car interiors feeling – and smelling – clean.
1. Don’t skip a deep clean
Odours cling to fabrics and soft furnishings, so your first step should be a proper interior clean.
Vacuum seats, carpets, and footwells thoroughly, then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over fabric surfaces and let it sit for a few hours to absorb smells before vacuuming again. This gentle method is an effective way to neutralise odours without masking them with synthetic sprays.
2. Replace your cabin air filter
If the air inside your car smells musty or stale, your cabin filter may be the culprit. This filter traps dust, pollen, and airborne particles before they enter the cabin, but over time, it can clog up and circulate unpleasant smells.
If you’re noticing persistent smells, it’s worth asking a professional to check the filter. Replacing it can significantly improve air quality, especially if you regularly use the heating or air conditioning.
3. Try natural deodorisers
Instead of masking smells with strong air fresheners, try placing natural odour absorbers like activated charcoal, coffee grounds, or bicarbonate of soda in a small container under a seat.
These materials can draw in and neutralise unwanted smells over time without overpowering your senses.
4. Clean your air-con system
If you notice a bad smell when turning on your air conditioning, it could be a sign of bacteria or mould buildup in the vents.
You can use an antibacterial air-con cleaner or book a professional treatment to flush the system. Keeping your air conditioning clean will help maintain a fresher interior all year round.
5. Make car cleanliness part of your routine
Preventing odours is easier than removing them, so try to stay on top of the small things. Remove rubbish after every trip, wipe down sticky surfaces, and avoid leaving damp coats or gym bags in the car.
Using removable seat covers and washable mats can also make it easier to keep the interior clean and odour-free.
