A petition has been launched by automotive trade bodies to stop the Government’s plans to extend the period before a vehicle has its first MOT, in order to reduce preventable casualties and deaths caused by vehicle defects.
The petition created by the Independent Garages Association states the proposal would be: Dangerous: Increased casualties and deaths caused by vehicle defects; Expensive: Increased vehicle repair, maintenance & insurance costs; Damaging: Increased pollution & congestion levels and Unnecessary: There is little evidence to suggest motorists want to change MOT frequency.
The RAC has called for the Government to mandate annual installation requirements for public charging points to keep the EV introduction going ahead and to prioritise ultra-rapid chargers.
RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said,“It’s all well and good having a zero-emission vehicle mandate for car manufacturers but if public charging isn’t keeping pace with EV registrations, then drivers will quickly become disillusioned and frustrated an data already shows a record number of electric vehicles per public charging point, so we strongly urge the Government to introduce annual installation targets and do whatever it takes to make it easier for operators to install new charging hubs.
