Motorists have been paying the price for exceeding the 20mph default urban speed limit in Wales in the last ten months with 11,065 fines dished out in south and mid Wales and 1,787 in North Wales.
Although the Welsh Government implemented the controversial low limit at a cost of £35M and attracted nearly 500,000 signatures on a petition calling for its repeal, the £1.28M fines have gone into the UK Treasury.
There was a jump in the numbers recorded and fined as the holiday season began and drivers not use to the 20mph limit visited Welsh towns and resorts.
Now Welsh Government say they will look again and ask councils to identify roads which should revert to the previous 30mph limit before the Senedd elections in 2026.
There are concerns in Cardiff Bay that a motorists’ protest vote could cost the Labour dominated Senedd a number of seats in a swing to the Welsh Conservatives who have pledged to scrap the 20mph limit.
