Swansea’s bendy-buses have reached the end of the road and will be taken out of service.
The council spent £10M making road alterations in the city centre to accommodate the extra long buses but operators First Cymru said they have become too expensive to run.
Alterations in The Kingsway saw the layout changed and afterwards there have been accidents involving pedestrians confused by the traffic, including two deaths.
The road layout was criticised by a coroner earlier this year for having a “serious design issue” after two people died.
Justin Davies, managing director of First Bus Cymru, said the bendy-bus had worked well since it was introduced in 2009 but more efficient buses will now be used.
He added, “Since their construction, engine technology has improved considerably with improved fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs.
“In light of these factors coupled with reduced fuel rebate and reductions in the funding for concessionary customers, the decision has been taken to withdraw the articulated buses from service.”
Traders in the city centre had complained of lost business as a result of the road realignment deterring pedestrians.
