The latest Volkswagen Golf is in its seventh heaven.
Not only is it the seventh generation model in the highly successful series over 34 years and 26 million sales, but it brings the latest engine technology into play, and that means giving you half an engine if necessary in the version tested. It is the first model in the Volkswagen group on UK roads to have active cylinder technology, which monitors throttle and power demands and if necessary shuts off two cylinders out of four to conserve petrol.
You may think this would give rise to a jerky German flailing itself in the name of economy but it actually works incredibly smoothly, quickly and efficiently.
Without any loss of refinement you make real time gains in fuel economy in a triumph of evolution over revolutions.
Taking cues from the new super-sleek Scirocco coupe it has the profile of the familiar hatchback but designers have given it a completely new interior with smoother curves and softer surfaces.
It is more than a cosmetic touch-up because the new VW Group MQB chassis beneath the skin makes for a better riding car with more room and sharper handling as well. It will be offered with adaptive chassis control, automatic distance control and the latest electronic stability programme as part of an extensive safety package which includes seven airbags and “smart” headrests.
There are four petrol and two common rail diesels in three trim levels of S, SE and GT with standard air con and CD systems with three or five-door bodies. The petrol units comprise 1.4 engines developing 80ps, 122ps or 160ps while the 2.0 diesels produce 110 and 140ps and later this year we will see 90ps 1.6 and 170ps 2.0 diesels. In all there are 25 derivatives but expect more to be added.
The latest technology with the 1.4ACT combines with stop/ start to minimise fuel use when its not really needed such as sitting in traffic or cruising and it meant we averaged comfortably about 44mpg.
But if you needed to press on the 140ps available underfoot gave you the instant, and plentiful power necessary for overtaking with safety. A light and smooth clutch and direct gearchange was appreciated in town while the turning circle was tight without being twitchy at speed. Brakes were well weighted for power and effort required to bring about a rapid and controlled stop.
Secondary controls were close to hand and the very clear instruments were stylish as well as practical with a really useful multi-mode display.
Heating and ventilation was effective and there are powered windows all-round while oddments and luggage space are good, the boot rising from 380-1270 litres capacity.
Access was very good for driver and passengers and once inside those in the back found plenty of leg and headroom and the front pair of seats showed excellent adjustment range.
Ride quality is vastly improved over previous Golf generations and the hardness has gone to be replaced by a much more compliant set up through the new MQB set up which has created a longer wheelbase and wider track. Visibility is good through the windows with effective wipers and bright, long range headlights.
More than ever before, this Golf feels very refined and sophisticated and well built.
