DVSA is urging drivers across Britain to check their vehicles before winter, as MOT testers share chilling examples including a badly damaged tyre and a suspension arm almost rusted through.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency is reminding motorists that an MOT checks important parts of a vehicle against legal standards, however a valid certificate does not guarantee that the vehicle remains roadworthy throughout the year.
Drivers should not ignore warning lights, unusual smells or changes in how their vehicle brakes or handles. If something is wrong or they are unsure, a qualified garage or mechanic can assess the problem and advise on repairs.
DVSA is asking motorists to make regular maintenance part of their routine, rather than waiting for the next MOT. Before winter, check:
- Tyres: check condition and pressures against the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Visibility: keep windows and mirrors clear, and check lights, demisters, wipers and washers work.
- Fluids and battery: check fluid levels and ensure the battery is maintained and suitable antifreeze and screenwash protection are in place.
Grant Thunder, DVSA MOT Service Manager said, “These examples are a serious reminder that vehicle maintenance matters all year round.
“Driving an unroadworthy vehicle puts you and other road users at risk. Don’t wait for the next MOT to act on a problem.
“If you are unsure, ask an experienced garage or mechanic for advice.”
