A plan to let HGVs use bus lanes has been suggested by the Traffic Commissioner for Wales, Nick Jones.
He has put the proposal in his annual report to Welsh Government and said the road transport industry is “essential for the ecnomy and provision of services.”
The move would improve traffic flow in some locations but has been criticised by Sustrans who fear it will be dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
The Road Haulage Association which looks after HGV owners said the proposal was not an alternative to future investment which is really needed and the Freight Transport Association looking after distribution operations welcomed the possible move.
It was a controversial bus lane system in Swansea which saw a number of fatalities and injuries and has since been remapped so users better understood its operation.
The Welsh Government is expected to make an announcement on the proposal next year.
