It is going to be easier for new EV owners to charge at home under Government plans designed to make it better for those without off-street parking to charge their electric vehicle.
It will launch a consultation on removing planning permission currently needed for those without driveways to install cross pavement charging gullies and wants to mandate charge points in new covered car parks.
The Government says it will also work with Ofgem to ensure public costs are fair and strengthen protections against landowners overcharging tenants for home charging above the market rate.
Transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, said, “Wherever you park your car, we’re making it fairer, easier, and cheaper to make the switch to electric.
“These reforms will improve infrastructure for the EV revolution, increase charge points across the country and open up affordable home charging to thousands more households.”
Very few home-owners have drives where they can install a charger and this clean up of legislation is needed in streets where the lead will have to cross a pavement, but precisely how the connections will be made has to be considered.
