Following the Welsh Government’s review of 20mph and 30mph speed limits on trunk roads, Welsh Conservatives have renewed their criticism for the policy, which could cost Labour their control of the Senedd in 7 May elections.
Sam Rowlands MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport & Infrastructure, argued that the £32 million policy has caused confusion and frustration across Wales.
He said this latest review will take too long to implement, by 2027, and fails to address motorists’ concerns. Mr Rowlands also raised concerns regarding the £9 Billion hit to the Welsh economy as a result of Labour and Plaid Cymru’s default 20mph speed limit.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport & Infrastructure, Sam Rowlands MS said, “Labour and Plaid Cymru’s disastrous default 20mph speed limit has slowed Wales down and held our economy back.
“Their own review now admits that some 20mph stretches on trunk roads such as the A483 and A494 went too far, with sections set to return to 30mph, but motorists will still face confusion and years of delays before changes are implemented.
“Lower speed limits make sense outside schools, hospitals and in high-risk areas, but Labour and Plaid’s one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. The Welsh Conservatives are committed to scrapping Labour’s default 20mph speed limit.”
There are concerns in Labour and Plaid Cymru parties that their promotion and now subsequent rethink of the controversial 20mph default limit will turn off supporters and voters who drive and hand a victory to Reform in Wales.
