We know there is still much to improve and remain focused on improving rail performance, Transport for Wales has stated following criticism of its services.
Its statement came after the operator was shown to have one of the worst reliability records in Britain with cancellations well above the British average and an MS suggested Cardiff Council should introduce a ‘commuter tax’ to encourage more people onto rail service.
A Transport for Wales statement this week said, “TfW is investing £800 million in brand-new trains across the Wales and Borders network and overall this is improving the customer experience and resilience on the network.
“The latest ORR figures confirm that TfW achieved the biggest improvement in punctuality of any UK train operator between April – June 2025 and was one of just five operators to see any improvement during this time.”
TfW has invested millions in an electrification programme as part of its Metro rail scheme for South East Wales and made improvements to stations throughout its network, particularly to assist travellers in wheelchairs and with limited sight or access problems.
When Cardiff discussed a road charging scheme a few years ago to reduce congestion and improve the city’s air quality opponents said it would be a tax on residents in the capital and commuters from the valleys who worked in Cardiff. The congestion charging scheme is still on the shelf.
TfW is also working on better links with trains and bus services throughout Wales and Cardiff may see a return of electric trams instead of trolleybuses which ran on 14 routes through the capital from 1942 to 1970.
