Car sales in Wales fell by over 5% last month.
Overall UK new-car registrations in May rose by 2.4 percent year-on-year to 198,706 vehicles, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The SMMT said the increase meant sales were up by 5.7 percent in the first five months of the year.
Registrations in the January-May period had been boosted by a four-fold increase in ultra-low emission vehicles, the industry group said.
But behind the increase due to business in England, the sales for Scotland, Wales and Ireland have gone down by much more.
They are down over 8% in Scotland, over 5% in Wales and by 3% in Northern Ireland.
Wales top sellers in May were: Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa, Vauxhall Mokka, VW Golf, Ford Kuga, Seat Ibiza, Nissan Qashqai, VW Polo and Fiat 500.
