The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is closing tonight for emergency repairs to the eastbound carriageway after discovery of a safety critical defect.
Commenting on news the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge will close for emergency repairs, South Wales Central MS Andrew RT Davies has said the importance of the route demonstrates the “folly of Welsh separatism”.
The Bridge will be closed on Wednesday 15 October between 10pm and 6am. But planned overnight closures on the M48 for 16 & 17 October have been postponed to enable the diversion to operate and minimise disruption.
Cars and light vehicles will be diverted via the M48 Severn Bridge, while HGVs over 7.5 tonnes will follow the approved heavy vehicle diversion from M4 junction 24, along the A449, A40 and M50 to join the M5 at junction 8 until junction 15 and rejoin the M4 at the Almondsbury interchange.
Mr Davies said, “This temporary closure is necessary, but demonstrates the importance of the M4 corridor to the South Wales economy and the folly of Welsh separatism endorsed by Plaid Cymru.
“The works will thankfully last one night, but many businesses will be forced to make an inconvenient diversion.
“It shows how disruptive a period of prolonged closure would be, and the knock on effects this would have on our intertwined economies.”
