With the new plate coming in next week, used car sellers have been told how to increase their price with a simple interior clean-up.
With over four million used cars sold in the UK so far this year, its clear many motorists are looking to get the best possible price for their car.
And while sellers often focus on the car’s mechanical condition, mechanics say the state of the interior can also influence how quickly a car sells and the offers it attracts.
In a survey of its automotive technicians, conducted by Vertu Motors, the top three car interior deal-breakers that sellers need to treat to get the most value for their motor were revealed.
The research found that visible stains or damage to seats and carpets were the top concern for 40% of experts, followed by persistent odours (30%) and malfunctioning internal controls (25%).
So, to help sellers maximise their car’s value, the experts at Vertu Motors have shared their advice on tackling the three biggest interior issues.
Tackle visible stains and damage
A stained or worn interior is an immediate red flag for buyers, suggesting a lack of general care and creates a negative impression that is hard to overcome.
Before listing your car for sale, give the interior a thorough deep clean. Start by vacuuming every surface, including under the seats and in all the crevices.
For fabric upholstery, a simple paste of baking soda and warm water can be effective for lifting stains. Apply it to the affected area, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft brush before wiping it clean. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn’t cause discolouration.
Eliminate persistent odours
Lingering odours from pets, smoke, or dampness can be difficult to remove and may suggest underlying issues like mould or mildew within your car’s ventilation system. So, instead of trying to mask smells with air fresheners, work to eliminate them at the source.
After a deep clean, place a small, open container of activated charcoal or baking soda under a seat. These natural materials are excellent at absorbing odours over a few days.
It is also worth replacing the cabin air filter, as a clogged filter can trap dust and moisture, circulating stale smells throughout your car.
Check all internal controls
Issues with electric windows, central locking, or the infotainment system are not just an inconvenience; they suggest potential electrical problems that can be expensive and complicated to fix.
Before a viewing, take the time to test every switch, dial, and button in your car. Ensure the air conditioning blows cold, all speakers are working, and there are no warning lights on the dashboard. If you find a minor issue, it’s often better to get it fixed by a professional beforehand.
