A new survey has looked at the quirks of car owners and drivers and come up with some surprises.
From talking to themselves behind the wheel to avoiding parking next to certain car makes, Britain’s motorists are a nation of quirky drivers, according to a new survey from iCarhireinsurance.com, a leading provider of car hire excess reimbursement insurance.
The poll of UK drivers uncovered some fascinating rituals and habits that motorists admit to while behind the wheel.
Top 10 Quirkiest Driving Habits
- Avoiding parking next to another vehicle in a car park – 52%
- Trying to stop the petrol pump on a round number – 43%
- Not letting the fuel needle drop below a minimum level – 38%
- Fully straightening the steering wheel every time you park – 30%
- Waiting to turn off the engine until the windscreen wipers return to their resting position – 27%
- Talking to yourself while driving – 23%
- Ducking when driving under a height restriction barrier – 14%
- Singing at the top of your voice – 13%
- Waiting for the refuel light before filling up – 12%
- Saying “wheeeee” when going over a humpback bridge – 11%
Other driving quirks include cheering when crossing a national border (11%), breathing in when going through tight spaces (10%), and avoiding parking next to certain car makes (10%) – while, thankfully, only 2% admit to shutting their eyes when driving through a tight gap.
Ben Wooltorton at iCarhireinsurance.com said, “While this isn’t an exhaustive list, many motorists will recognise a few of these quirks in themselves.
“Driving is often one of the few times we’re completely alone, so whether it’s avoiding certain parking spots or talking to ourselves on the motorway, it’s no surprise that we develop our own little rituals behind the wheel.”
