Black cars outsell all other colours in the used car market, yet drivers are most likely to search for white models, according to research released today by the AA’s used cars’ website.
Historically, silver was the best-selling car colour, topping the tables in 2009, 2010 and 2011. But since then black has consistently beaten all other colours, dominating the market and accounting for more than a fifth (21%) of sales on the AA Cars website so far this year.
Silver is now only the fifth highest-selling colour, with 13% of sales, behind black, white (20.3%), grey (14.9%) and blue (14.3%).
Overall, silver’s share of the used car market has shrunk from 20% in 2014 to 13% in 2019.
White has made a steady rise through the ranks in the past 10 years. In 2009, it barely made the top seven, securing just a 1.5% share of car sales. By 2014, this had risen to 13.9% and it has a 20.3% share in 2019.
