As the winter season approaches, van insurance provider MoneySuperMarket warns motorists could unknowingly put their cover at risk by leaving their vehicles running to defrost and warm up.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported more than 350,000 vehicle thefts in the UK over the past year, highlighting the risk of thieves actively targeting idling, unattended vans.
Many drivers don’t realise that leaving their keys in the ignition and letting their van run while unattended to warm up could be classified as negligence in their insurance policy. Most insurance policies include “keys in vehicle” exclusions, which place responsibility on the policyholder to take reasonable actions to prevent theft.
If a van is left unlocked and unattended while the engine is running, insurers could argue that the theft was avoidable and therefore not covered.
What policy terms to look for?
If you check your insurance policy, you’ll likely find a “keys in vehicle” exclusion clause that means cover is excluded if your van is left alone with the keys inside or the engine running.
Policies may also include a clause about “reasonable precautions.” If an insurer determines that the theft could have been prevented by the driver taking more care, such as locking the van or turning off the engine, your claim could be denied.
How to avoid invalidating your insurance
To stay protected, follow these steps:
Always remain inside your vehicle when the engine is running.
Use alternative defrosting methods such as windscreen covers, ice scrapers or de-icer sprays.
Stay informed by reviewing your policy for exclusions on unattended vehicles and key clauses.
MoneySuperMarket van insurance expert Sara Newell says, “No matter how cold it is, the risk of losing your insurance cover isn’t worth a few extra minutes of warmth.
“Many policies include exclusions for unattended vehicles, meaning if your van is stolen, your insurer may not cover the cost. Thieves may target running vans that have been left unattended in winter, and insurance providers see this as an avoidable risk.
“Drivers should stay informed by reviewing their policy terms and using windscreen covers and de-icer sprays. Prevention is key, to protect both your vehicle and your insurance coverage.”
