Make BST permanent to cut accidents
When the clocks strike 1am on Sunday the hour will go forward and British Summer Time will have officially started. Time to save lives again, says RoSPA
The Government conducted a three-year experiment 51 years ago which saved hundreds of lives by bringing the clocks forward in March 1968 and not turning them back until October 1971. RoSPA is calling for the UK to learn from the 1968 trial and save lives by scrapping clock changes in October and employing British Summer Time (BST) – GMT+1 – all year round. Ahead of the clocks going back this Sunday, turning the evening commute darker for drivers, research from Confused.com reveals car accidents peak during the evening rush 4pm – 8pm. According to new Freedom of Information data, last year alone saw 55,441 accidents take place during the rush-hour period (4-8pm).
